Upper Eastside Neighborhood Conservation District

Tomorrow evening at Legion Park a meeting will be held to discuss the establishment of an Upper East Side Neighborhood Conservation District (NCD). The City of Miami is proposing to create a NCD which would include the communities of Belle Meade, Morningside, Palm Grove, Shorecrest, Bayside and the MiMo Historic District.

Although the NCD already appears to be a contentious issue, there are several benefits that an NCD can offer. The Upper Eastside communities are fragmented, but they shouldn’t be because they have much in common.  The creation of an NCD is the first step to unify these communities and bring them together to speak with one voice. As a unified neighborhood (2,200 residents), an Upper Eastside NCD would potentially become a very influential political voice with the power determine the future development patterns for the neighborhood.

The creation of an NCD would perhaps be the catalyst to form an Upper Eastside Council comprised of members from each of the community’s respective HOAs.  The Council would operate similarly to the Coconut Grove Village Council which has shown to wield considerable political muscle in Coconut Grove. With the formation of an NCD and an Upper Eastside Council a powerful voting block would be created.  The demographics are quickly changing in the neighborhood so it would be wise to organize and speak with a single voice.

The meeting to discuss an Upper Eastside NCD will be held on Thursday June 14, at 6:00pm at Legion Park. Please spread the word.
