Ace Props will make your special event special

I discovered Ace Props Miami while riding my bike through the warehouse district in Little Haiti a few weeks ago.  Ace Props has just about every vintage prop you can think of.  From furniture to lighting to classic wooden surf boards-they have it all. Steve Harivel has owned the store since 2005 and his collection of props is tastefully selected and simply amazing.  Unfortunately, nothing is for sale, but you can rent all of the items for special events or for a photo or movie shoot.

Wynwood’s New Restaurant Hub

The intersection at NW 28th Street and North Miami Avenue is becoming Wynwood’s new restaurant hub.

Jimmy’s Kitchen serves Puerto Rican cuisine and has been a long time favorite of mine.  In the interest of full disclosure, my wife is Puerto Rican, so I do love most things Puerto Rican.

Indulge in the:

Seafood and pork Mofongo
Boletas de queso with guava sauce
Zarzuela de Mariscos
Guava cake

Bloom has an outdoor bar, as well as outdoor dinning.

Bloom Wynwood opened its door about 6 months ago.  My first experience was positive and I would certainly entertain going back again.  The owners are from Guatemala, so the food certainly has a touch of Guatemalan influence, but is also fused with a hint of Asian flavor. Makes for some interestingly unique dishes.

Indulge in the:

Braised oxtail tamale
Octopus shaken
Korean BBQ short rib.

Pride and Joy BBQ opened about a month or so ago. I had the pleasure of eating there last night.  This place was a former crack house that was filled with vagrants and slated to be condemned. Luckily, the owners of this new bbq joint had a vision and saved this 1939 building from demolition. The 1,800 sq foot restaurant also has a huge outdoor space and last night there was a live band playing.  The food is good and would certainly go back.

Outdoor picnic tables with live music in the garden

Indulge in the:

Bowl of Burnt Ends
Fried pickles
Brisket cheesesteak

The scene at this intersection has really taken a turn for the better in recent months.  Now, all we need is a crosswalk at this intersection so people can actually cross North Miami Avenue safely. I’m not going to hold my breath on the crosswalk since Miami Dade Public Works and Waste Management is in charge of this road and their track record has a lot to be desired when it comes to pedestrian safety. This department believes that crosswalks are optional for city streets.

Edgy Urban Space in Wynwood

Check out this great urban space located in Wynwood.  Two used shipping containers have been placed on top of each other. The ground floor containers has been converted into a bar and the second container appears to have been transformed into a lounge.  The 5,300 sq ft venue is elegantly designed. MAPS seems to manage this space. It would be a great venue to throw that special edgy event. The property is located at 342 NW 24th Street.

For Art Basel LAN TAM sponsored the Let’s Make Flight event at this location.

Art Basel for Cyclists

It’s no secret that we love bicycles at Miami Urbanist.  As many of you know, I have been hired by StreetEasy to help lead the company’s expansion into the South Florida market. Lucky for me, StreetEasy also loves bicycles.  In fact, the CEO of our company has purchased bicycles for all StreetEasy employees.  Since StreetEasy is new in South Florida we decided to partner-up with the ArtCycle and the Green Mobility Network to sponsor two great Art Basel initiatives.

We are sponsoring ArtCycle- an art event created to raise awareness for riders and drivers by promoting wellness and safer streets through an active lifestyle and the arts. ARTcycle’s first event will work with renowned sponsored artists who will use 15 bikes as their canvas.

In addition, StreetEasy has sponsored the Green Mobility Network bike valet at O Cinema in Wynwood. You will be able to ride your bicycle to Art Basel and park it in a secure location and not have to worry about it while you enjoy all the great art in the neighborhood.

Below is more information about ArtCycle, the Green Mobility Network bike valet and events related to biking during Art Basel.

ARTcycle art bikes will be exhibited during Art Basel days, December 7-9, 2012 in 11 locations throughout Wynwood. Visitors may see all the art bikes any day, all day long or they may enjoy a bicycle ARTcycle bike tour sponsored by and departing from Fountain Art Fair – 2505 N. Miami Ave December 7th, 8th, and 9th at noon.
